Ys Origin
Zwei: The Ilvard Insurrection for PC is an action RPG developed by Nihon Falcon, creators of game series like The Legend of Heroes or Ys. Initially, the game was released in Japan in 2008. The Ilvard Insurrection is based on Zwei II Plus, an improved and extended version of Zwei that was released in Japan in 2009.
Plot
The game takes place in a fantasy world where, as a result of the war between demons and humans (aided by dragons), magic is not as strong and present as it once was. Because of that, inhabitants of the continents of this world that are floating in the clouds can no longer communicate because one could only get from one of them to another through magical portals. However, thanks to the fast technological advancement, people soon solved the problem. When we start our adventure, planes are becoming more and more popular in the world of Zwei.
The story begins when a treasure hunter named Ragna Valentine crashes his plane and gets badly wounded. Alwen Du Moonbria, a vampire, saves him from death. It results in a blood contract between the two of them that will forever bind their fates together.
Mechanics
Zwei: The Ilvard Insurrection for PC is an action RPG where we will spend most of our time on exploration and combat. The game has a rather arade combat system, but its mechanics are quite uncommon. Ragna uses melee weapons and Alwen relies on combat spells. We activate physical and magical attacks with different buttons. When we do so, we are almost instantly given control over a character assigned to that given type of attack.
The progression system is also not what we are accustomed to. We won’t find any experience points here. Instead, our fallen enemies leave food behind. We can eat it to restore HP or use to increase our character’s stats. In addition to that, we will find restaurants in towns where we can combine our ingredients into more complicated dishes that will give us more points to spend on stats than consuming those exact ingredients one by one.
Technical Aspects
Zwei: The Ilvard Insurrection for PC has 3D visuals inspired by Japanese cartoons. Despite the fact that the game was originally released almost a decade ago, it still looks quite good thanks to its colourful art style.
