A remastered version of the second entry in the Zone of the Enders series, titled The 2nd Runner. The players assume the role of Dingo Egret, a pilot of the powerful combat mech known as Jehuty. His task is to finally defeat the BAHRAM organization known from the first game.

Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner Mars is a remastered version of the second entry in the Zone of the Enders series. The title was developed for PC and PS4 by an internal development team of Konami.

Plot

Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner Mars takes place two years after the events depicted in the first entry in the series. The main protagonist of the game is Dingo Egret, an ex-pilot of BAHRAM who now works as a miner on Kallisto, one of the Jupiter’s moons. When he manages to find Jehuty, a powerful robot known from the original game, he is attacked by his ex-employers. When he refuses to join their ranks again, they mortally wound him. Luckily, agent Ken Marinaris helps him. She connects him to the life support systems of Jehuty. From now, Dingo is unable to leave the cockpit of Jehuty and his objective is to destroy BAHRAM.

Mechanics

In Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner Mars, the action is presented from a third-person perspective. The game is linear – it consists of a series of levels in which the players are mostly tasked with fighting hordes of enemies. Among the latter, there are combat machines, smaller robots, and powerful mechs similar to the Jehuty. The opponents can be eliminated by using a variety of attacks – the players can use ranged weapons, a giant energy sword, and pieces of surroundings used as temporary weapons.

By winning, the players are reaching new levels and they increase their combat potential. If the mech is damaged, it is possible to repair it by using Metatron, a resource that can be collected during the game. The story of the game revolves around the mining of this resource.

It is worth mentioning that a scoring system is always grading players’ playstyle.

Technical aspects

Compared to the original version from 2003, Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner Mars features improved graphics. The game supports a 4K resolution. The sounds were improved as well. The game also supports virtual reality goggles, although they aren’t mandatory for the game to work.
