Ys: Memories of Celceta is a classic, three-dimensional action RPG that is part of the Ys series. The series began in 1987 and since then it was developed by Nihon Falcom – one of the few Japanese developers that specialize in games created for personal computers. However, since the first decade of the 21st century, the studio started to create games for consoles as well. Ys: Memories of Celceta is a completely new version of the fourth entry in the series that originally debuted during the nineties. The game originally debuted in 2012 as one of the first games released on PlayStation Vita.
Plot
In Ys: Memories of Celceta, similarly to other games in the Ys series, the players assume the role of Adol Christin, a young, red-haired adventure seeker. He travels through fantasy realms and he gets himself dragged into various trouble. At the beginning of the game, he enters a city called Casnan, located in a forest country of Celceta. For unknown reasons, he becomes amnesiac. With newly met friends, he is trying to regain his lost memories and discover the truth about himself.
Mechanics
Ys: Memories of Celceta is a classic, three-dimensional action RPG in which the players are controlling a group of three characters. The players can use a variety of special attacks and various weapons and equipment. Each character uses a different weapon, effective against specific types of hostiles. For example, heavy armored opponents are resistant to swords or spears, but an attack of an iron gauntlet or a war hammer is dangerous for them. Flying enemies are vulnerable to shots and agile enemies are vulnerable to incisive weapons. The key to victory lies in properly selecting the team and equipment.
Battles against giant bosses are the greatest attraction of the game. These enemies frequently can fill even half of the screen. Each encounter with them requires the players to develop proper tactics and use correct skills. The game also features many optional tasks and bosses. Special rewards wait for those who defeat them.
Technical aspects
The graphics of Ys: Memories of Celceta aren’t impressive – they represent the quality of titles available on PlayStation 2. The strength of the game lies in the presentation of the fictional world and its inhabitants. The soundtrack is good as well.
