Yomawari: Midnight Shadows

Yomawari: Midnight Shadows for PC, PS4 and PSV is a horror action-adventure game developed by the Japanese studio Nippon Ichi Software and a sequel to Yomawari: Night Alone.

Plot

The game takes place in modern-day Japan and tells the story of two girls: Yui and Haru. One summer evening they go to the mountains to have a better view of the fireworks show. When they decide to come back it is already so dark that they can’t find the way back home. To make matters worse, the darkness separates them after a while.

Mechanics

Yomawari: Midnight Shadows for PC, PS4 and PSV is an action-adventure game that tests our agility and wit. As we play, we explore a city that drastically changed when the sun came down and try to help the girls meet. The camapaign has segments where we will play as both Yari and Haru. Actions we take as one of them influence the fate of the other.

Streets of the city are patrolled by all kinds of ghosts and monsters. Our heroines are practically defenceless, so we will have to do anything we can to avoid any kind of confrontation. Using our flashlight will allow us to detect and uncover most of the threats, but some enemies are invisible. When these invisible foes are close, our heroines’ pulse rises and warns us about the incoming danger.

Gameplay does not focus on only sneaking around. From time to time we will have to simply run away or defeat the ghosts with the help of various items.

Technical Aspects

Just like its prequel, Yomawari: Midnight Shadows for PC, PS4 and PSV has nice 2D visuals with cartoon-like art-style, and ghost design inspired by Japanese folklore.

Nonetheless, some tweaks and improvements were implemented. The map is now twice as big as the one from the first game and now also includes the interior of various buildings. Most of the time we observe the action form an isometric point of view, but there are some segments of the game, which we observe it from a side-scrolling perspective.
