Yatagarasu: Attack on Cataclysm PC

Yatagarasu: Attack on Cataclysm is a dynamic, two-dimensional fighting game for PC, funded in Indiegogo website and inspired by classic titles of Capcom and golden age of Neo Geo arcade machines. It is an enhanced and improved version of the title developed by three former developers of SNK studio, known mainly as co-creators of The King of Fighters series. Original Yatagarsu has been published only in Japan in 2011, with the second game being released by British company of Nyu Media, which specializes in delivering independent titles from Japan to the West.

Plot

Yatagarasu: Attack on Cataclysm for PC combines myths and history of Japan, as suggested by the title (Yatagarasu is the name of three-legged crown, a bird of goddess of sun Amaterasu). We go back to 20th century, when a revolution broke out that forced government to establish Yatagarsu, an organization of assassin’s tasked with suppressing the rebellion and eliminating those who oppose the authority of politics.

Game mechanics

Compared to original game, Yatagarasu: Attack on Cataclysm offers greatly expanded single player campaign, with many additional plotlines. Many improvements and fixes were made in gameplay as well. New heroes have been added, obviously with their unique special attacks in addition to four basic moves and two counters – upper and lower. Old characters also received new techniques and it is possible to interrupt opponent’s action before it end on more advanced levels.

Technical aspects and game modes

One change that is visible with at the first sight in Yatagarasu: Attack on Cataclysm is how it looks and sounds. Visuals were improved thanks to the usage of higher quality textures, though they still give the old-school vibe. We also hear live actors giving voices to all characters, and there is unique comment system for fights, prepared in collaboration with top Japanese players, finalists of many tourneys in games like Street Fighter series. Aside from campaign and mandatory arcade mode, there is also online multiplayer. Two contestants can face each other in duel, while eight more players can wait in lobby for their turn.
