A stand-alone story expansion to the 2017 jRPG Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The expansion takes place 500 years before the events depicted in the base game and its main character is the antagonist of the previous game.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country is a stand-alone story expansion to the jRPG from 2017 Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The title was developed by Japanese studio Monolith Soft, the creators of the previous entries in the series and of the cult series Xenosaga. It is worth mentioning that Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country is sold as a stand-alone game, but it is also part of the season pass to the base game and it is available for all owners of it. Users who will buy the box edition of the game will also receive a code for all remaining DLC to the base game.
Plot
Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country takes place 500 years before the events depicted in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The main protagonist of the game is Jin, the antagonist of the previous game. The expansion sheds a new light on this character and it enables the players to explore the legendary Torna continent about which they could have only heard in the base game. During the adventure, the players encounter new characters and they visit many unique places. Because the expansion is a prequel, it can be played by everyone and the knowledge of events depicted in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 isn’t required.
Mechanics
The gameplay mechanics weren’t greatly changed since Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The game is a classic RPG in which the action is presented from a third-person perspective. The combat system wasn’t changed as well. The playable characters are accompanied by Blades – the living weapons that provide various special skills and attacks. During the adventure, the players are exploring new locations and cities of Torna, where they are fighting previously unseen enemies.
Technical aspects
Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country at first glance looks same as the base game, but thanks to the new locations and the unique environment of Torna, the veterans will encounter various surprises. The game features many new dialogues, cutscenes, and music.

GamingTrend: 60 / 100 by Nathan Anstadt
Torna: The Golden Country is an ambitious addition to an already enormous game, but by stripping away many of the features on the sides of the experience, you're left with a game that never quite finds the highs present in the original game. The story was fun, if hammy at times, but worth seeing. I only wish they had taken better advantage of the excellent changes to combat here to deliver more on the faster-paced combat rather than the dull and laborious side quests.

Nintendo Switch is no stranger to DLC and add-on content, but few expansions are as vast in their size and content as Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna - The Golden Country. Whether you're a season pass holder looking to revisit a series you love from a new perspective, or you're fresh to the franchise and want a standalone adventure, this hefty slice of JRPG action will grab you right from the moment you start switching between Blade and Driver. With some welcome adjustments to combat and combos, this is a fine addition to an already brilliant game on Switch.
ZTGD: 9 / 10 by Jae Lee
Torna ~ The Golden Country marks a wonderful send off to the world of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 with its cast of likeable characters, compelling narrative and a revamped combat engine that feels even better than the original. Having spent more than 150~ hours in the world of Alrest combined through the two titles, I can't help but feeling that I still want more- a desire that serves as undeniable proof to the excellence of this series.
