Xanadu Next is a jRPG by Nihon Falcom studio. The game was released only in Japan in 2005. The English version was released a decade later by XSEED.

Plot

The action of Xanadu Next takes place in typical magical fantasy land, culturally and technologically modeled on the European Middle Ages. We play as a dishonored knight hired by a scientist named Charlotte to explore the ruins located on Harlech Island.

Unfortunately, the knight is attacked by a mysterious warrior and gravely injured. The knight is saved from death by an ancient ritual - it connected his soul with the island. Unfortunately, this means that he will die after leaving it. The only way to avoid this fate is to find the legendary magical sword known as the Dragon Slayer.

Mechanics

Xanadu Next was created exclusively for the PC, but the game is still faithful to the solutions known from Japanese RPGs. It offers an arcade combat system and the gameplay focuses on fighting spectacular battles against large groups of enemies. We fight using both melee weapons and spells.

As befits an RPG, Xenadu Next also offers a character progression system, in which we improve the knight's skills by spending the accumulated experience points. However, this element has a rather unusual solution. When you reach a new level of experience, you are given a choice between warrior or mage classes, and then you must play as this profession until the next level.

Xanadu Next also has a system to encourage long sessions. Defeating each group of opponents increases the received experience points by 1%. The longer we play, the faster we accumulate experience. This bonus resets when you leave the game.
