X-Men: Children of the Atom on PC and PS1 is the first Battle released by Capcom, where players have the opportunity to direct the actions of their favourite characters from the universe of the X-Men comic cycle. Production is based on solutions known from the Street Fighter and Darkstalkers series.

Story

The plot of X-Men: Children of the Atom loosely refers to the main theme of the Fatal Attractions comic series. The evildoer Magneto intends to use a powerful electromagnetic impulse to disrupt the Earth's magnetic field and bring humanity back to the Middle Ages, allowing mutants to take control of the planet. Of course, mutants try to prevent this.

Mechanics

Ten of the thirteen characters in the game are available to players. Playable heroes include six X-Men (Colossus, Cyclops, Storm, Iceman, Psylocke and Wolverine) and four of their opponents (Omega Red, Sentinel, Silver Samurai and Spiral). Juggernaut and Magneto play the role of bosses, and the hidden heros is Akuma from Super Street Fighter II Turbo.

Each character in the game has its own set of special attacks and a separate combat scene. During the duels the participants also gather special energy - X-Power, which can be used to activate special skills (weaker - X-Ability or stronger - Hyper X). The fights are played in rounds of up to two wins.

The game offers the opportunity to compete with artificial intelligence or a living opponent. In the first case, the player is fighting a series of duels with stronger and stronger opponents. In the second case, the participants of the game decide for themselves what characters they will face in the virtual ring.

Technical issues

X-Men visuals: Children of the Atom does not differ in quality from the standards set by Street Fighter games. Two-dimensional graphics are maintained in vivid colors, and the skirmishes are accompanied by a large number of animated special effects (explosions, flashes, etc.).
