Wooden Nickel Description
Wooden Nickel is a point-and-click adventure game that takes us on a journey to the Wild West. The title was developed by the independent studio Brain&Brain, creators of such warmly-received titles as Burly Men at Sea.
Plot
Wooden Nickel takes us to 1895. The main character arrives in a small town in the Wild West, where he intends to spend the next week. In order to be up to date, the protagonist reaches for the local newspaper every morning, and during the day he sometimes solves absurd puzzles and problems troubling the inhabitants. As time goes by, our protégé (and thus the player) can see how his decisions shape the future of this place and its relations with the natives.
Mechanics
The action of Wooden Nickel, is shown from the side. The gameplay is divided into seven days, each of which starts with a look at the new issue of the local newspaper, where you will find short articles on a variety of topics, as well as advertisements on places worth visiting. After clicking on an interesting publication, the hero is moved to the corresponding location. During the exploration of individual locations, we interact with the environment, look for objects worthy of attention and conduct conversations with the characters we meet.
Where we decide to go, and which of the problems affecting the local population we manage to solve, affects the content of the next issue of the newspaper and, consequently, the life of the whole town and the adventures that await us the next day. As during one week (after which a train arrives in the town to take the hero to the south) it is impossible to check all the possibilities, the game is characterized by high replayability.
Technical aspects
Wooden Nickel features minimalist, two-dimensional graphics, which, due to its simplicity, can evoke some associations with productions from 8-bit era. The game is complemented by a modest (though fulfilling its purpose, because it enables you to "feel" the atmosphere of the place) sound layer.
