WiiU

Woah Dave!, released on WiiU, 3DS, etc., is a very simple 2D arcade game, drawing inspiration and imitating the aesthetics of the games which appeared in the arcade salons and on Atari consoles in the '80s. The title was created by an independent development studio MiniVision, which is a part of Choice Provision. It was previously known as Gaijin Games and was responsible for the award-winning BIT.TRIP series.

Mechanics

The gameplay in Woah Dave! is extremely uncomplicated. The action of the game takes place entirely on a single 2D screen with rectangular platforms that hang above a lava tank. Players control the titular Dave, who fights waves of monsters. Interestingly, enemies that are still alive transform over time into more dangerous forms. At first, they are only harmless eggs, but after a few seconds, one-eyed monsters hatch from them. These monsters will become stronger over time. Jumping from platform to platform, Dave defends himself by lifting falling eggs and throwing bombs at enemies who drop gold coins. The more coins we collect, the better our final result will be. The amount of gold collected during each session affects the speed of play, the appearance of the board and the increasing level of lava. Achievements can be compared with other players thanks to network tables and statistics.

Technical aspects

The graphics in Woah Dave! are minimalistic and they reflect the spirit of games from the early 1980s. The creators preserved similar aesthetics in the soundtrack and the accompanying simple electronic sounds.
