Winter Ember is a stealth game developed by the independent Australian team at Sky Machine Studios. The game was released by Blowfish Studios, whose portfolio includes Siegecraft Commander, Storm Boy: The Game and JackQuest: The Tale of the Sword.
Plot
Winter Ember takes us on a journey to a fantasy universe inspired by Great Britain from the Victorian era. The main character of the game is Arthur Artorias, who, after nearly ten years of exile, returns to the city of Anargal. It turns out, however, that control of the metropolis was taken over by religious military fanatics known as Greater Heaven. To survive, the hero must remain hidden, making darkness his best ally.
Mechanics
In Winter Ember the action is observed from isometric view. The mainstay of the game are missions, which take place on large open maps. Entering through the front door is not usually a good idea; in every location there are several roads leading to the target, and in order to find them we need to be clever and perceptive.
As befits a hero working in the shadows, Arthur can hide and sneak past his opponents' backs, eliminating them from the surprise. The protagonist can use a bow with an arsenal of different arrows, the list of the latter including both standard models for killing and special models that evoke associations with the iconic Thief series, such as water arrows, enabling us to extinguish torches from a safe distance. In addition, the protagonist uses a dagger, enabling him to face his enemies in open combat as well. The hero also knows how to peep through keyholes to see what's waiting for him behind the door; he's also familiar with pocketing or climbing.
Technical aspects
Winter Ember is powered by Unreal Engine 4, the visuals adopt dark colurs and are complemented by an atmospheric soundtrack, creating a gloomy atmosphere.
