Wildfrost is a combination of a roguelike and a card game. It was developed by two indie studios - Deadpan Games (founded by Will Lewis, the developers of Caveblazers) and Gaziter (the developers of Forager). The game was published by Chucklefish.
Plot
Wildfrost is set in a fantasy world overrun by the titular Wildfrost. The last resisting bastion of the old order is the settlement of Snowdwell. The playable character is the leader of its inhabiting tribe, setting out on a journey to reach the Sun Temple, defeat the Frost Guardian and disperse the cataclysm.
Mechanics
Wildfrost begins with choosing a tribe and its leader. The available leaders vary in terms of skills and stats. Afterwards, the game proper begins. The player sees the road ahead, as well as upcoming locations and events, on an easily understandable map. The game's world is procedurally generated, making each expedition slightly different. The fun doesn't end even after completing our main task, as there are still daily quests and challenges to undertake.
Combat is the most important part of the game. Battles are turn-based, tasking us with playing unit cards, attack cards or effect cards (the effects vary from buffing our deck to neutralizing the next enemy attack). Cards are played automatically, therefore to succeed we must arrange our deck in a way that increases our chances of victory. In addition, each card has a timer that counts down until when it will be used again.
Progressing through the game lets us expand our deck (for example, by freeing frozen creatures and having them join us) and upgrading already owned cards to face greater challenges. Between expeditions we can also spend time in Snowdwell, developing the settlement. New buildings are a worthwhile investment, as they unlock useful upgrades, cosmetics and bonus challenges.
Technical aspects
Wildfrost makes use of a colorful, cartoonish artstyle.
