Wildermyth is an original tactical RPG. The small independent studio Worldwalker Games from Austin, Texas developed the game.
Plot
Wildermyth takes us on a journey to a fantasy realm called Yondering Lands. We experience various adventures in it, controlling groups of three characters, each of whom has their own history and personality. As we progress, our characters not only grow stronger, from simple farmers to battle-hardened heroes, but also establish various relationships, and even age to finally leave in glory (or not, because their fates depend on the decisions we make during the game) and have a chance to come back in the next story.
Mechanics
We start the game in Wildermyth with the creation of our team of heroes. The stats of individual members are automatically selected based on their history and personality (if the effect does not suit us, the process can be repeated until the effect is achieved), and we can freely modify their appearance. Although at the beginning of the game our proteges are ordinary farmers, as they progress, they become more and more specialized in a particular profession, so they can become fearless warriors, gunslingers, hunters or powerful mages.
Each game is a separate adventure, in which we find ourselves on a unique map, where we have to perform various missions. Moreover, our activities, such as moving around the world map, discovering new places and completing tasks, as well as fighting, take time. The events, in which we take part affect not only the course of the story, but also our protagonists and their relationships, which in turn is reflected in their statistics or combat efficiency; for example, friendly competition between heroes can lead to more damage to enemies, the love of two lovers can result in a descendant who will be able to join our team over time, while an aged hero is weaker and slower than a younger one.
Combat plays an important role here. Fights take place in a turn-based mode, in arenas covered with square grid. Success requires us not only to juggle the heroes' combat skills, but also to properly deploy them on the battlefield. As befits an RPG, as we progress, our characters gain experience and better equipment, which enbales them to face ever-increasing challenges. If one of them dies, we can let them go or resurrect them; after the adventure is over, we can move our characters to another story.
Technical aspects
Wildermyth cartoonish graphics may appeal; its individual elements are flat and hand-drawn, and are designed to look like they were created from paper.
