What Never Was is a first-person adventure game that takes place in modern times. The story presented in this production is inspired by Nordic myths and the work of the horror master H.P. Lovecraft, which is often adapted into video games. Acke Hallgren, a former employee of Avalanche Studios, is responsible for developing this production. What Never Was is the first title to be created under his leadership (but it is not an independent project - other people were also involved in its creation).
Plot
Howard James Wright dies of old age at the end of the first decade of the 21st century, leaving behind a rich collection of old books, memoirs and other relics of the past. When his great-grandson Sara undertakes the task of cleaning the attic occupied by the man, she discovers that not everything is as it seems.
Mechanics
In What Never You we observe the action from first-person perspective. The mechanics of this title are inspired by such games as Myst or The Longest Journey. Playing the role of Sarah, the player explores the attic, examins items, reads entries in books and diaries and solves logic puzzles. The aim of the game is to discover the mysterious past of the great-grandfather of the girl. It should be noted that the game is rather short - it can be completed in one evening.
Game modes
We can only play What Never You solo, as the creators did not prepare any multiplayer mode.
Technical aspects
What Never You features attractive, three-dimensional visuals. The game is powered by the popular Unreal Engine 4 engine, which provides a high-quality visual experience. Both the game world and character models have been prepared with great attention to detail. Realistic and atmospheric lighting also makes a great impression. It is worth noting that Acke Hallgren's production was released in a free-to-play model.
