Westward Journey Online II is an MMORPG inspired by Chinese culture, and more specifically Journey to the West directed by Stephen Chow, based on a novel of the same title by Wu Cheng. The game was initially released as Westward Journey Online II, but due to serious technical problems the servers were shut down. The title was released again as Westward Journey II. The game was developed and released by The Chinese company NetEase .

Plot

Both the book and film, based on which the world of Westward Journey Online II was designed, tell the story of a Buddhist monk's Xuanzang, who goes on a pilgrimage to Central Asia and India. The aim of his expedition was to retrieve sacred religious scrolls (known as sutra). The story is inspired by Chinese culture, mythology, and folklore, as well as obvious references to Buddhist philosophy.
