We Love Katamari REROLL + Royal Reverie is a content-enhanced remastered version of We Love Katamari, an unusual arcade-puzzle game, which in turn was a sequel to Katamari Damacy from 2004. It was developed and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, the franchise's owners.
Plot
We Love Katamari REROLL + Royal Reverie takes place in a universe ruled by the aptly named King of the Cosmos. There are two stories featured in the game. In the first one, the ruler, surprised by how many fans he's acquired on Earth, sends his son down to the planet once again. The Prince of the Cosmos along with his cousins must, once again, roll his Katamari through the blue planet, creating new stars to inhabit the sky. The second story tells the tale of the King himself, his difficult relationship with his father, how he acquired the throne and how he fathered his descendant, the Prince of the Cosmos.
Mechanics
The gameplay of We Love Katamari REROLL + Royal Reverie is shown from the third-person perspective (TPP). The player takes control over one of the available characters and must roll a ball - the titular Katamari - through a variety of locations. Rolling over smaller items and objects attaches them to the ball; after it gains enough mass, the Katamari grows, allowing us to stick even larger things to it. Though we start off limited to small items, such as coins or pencils, over time we can start sticking more objects to our Katamari, such as cars, buildings, mountains or even clouds. Although it is possible to roll Katamari on walls, they must be approached slowly. High-speed collisions or bumping into moving objects break off parts of our sphere.
The remaster introduces a number of new features, such as new challenges starring the young King of the Cosmos, a photo mode letting us take selfies, the ability to compose our own music playlist or special indicators showing objects we should stick to the Katamari.
Game modes
We Love Katamari REROLL + Royal Reverie supports singleplayer and multiplayer, both cooperative and competitive. The game offers a variety of game modes. In addition to Make A Star, a standard mode during which we roll our Katamari to create stars, we can also make a snowman's head out of snow, collect children and deliver them to school or... roll a sumo wrestler around, feeding him and making him put on more weight. There's also a brand new mode - Eternal Mode - letting us freely roll our Katamari through the world without any objectives or limitations.
Technical aspects
The visuals of We Love Katamari REROLL + Royal Reverie are colorful, cartoonish and easily readable. The remastered version doesn't feature any drastic changes, rather being adapted to widescreen resolutions.
