We Kill Monsters

We Kill Monsters is a third-person fantasy action adventure RPG. It was created by Jacob Williams, a former filmmaker and the founder of the indie studio GLASS REVOLVER. It was earlier responsible for two bullet-hell action games: ITTA and HOUSE OF GOD. The game was published by Annapurna Interactive - a division of the American company Annapurna Pictures, founded in December 2016.

Plot

The game stars Husk - a homunculus created to explore the depths and hunt Angels. Like the others of his kin, he is sent to The Shell - a massive pit underneath the city of Edinu where he was born. The city is slowly dying, its only hope being Primordial Fluid, the blood that flows through The Shell.

Its first layers have already been drained dry, forcing homunculi to delve deeper. To do so, they descend down the Great Elevator, which seems capable of reaching unlimited depth. It uses massive amounts of energy though, which can be provided by a death of an Angel.

Mechanics

The player's goal is do find and kill an Angel. They must therefore make their way through The Shell, tracking the creature. Each layer is expansive and open, letting homunculi navigate them freely using tools and scattered high objects.

Tracking and killing an Angel is no easy task, requiring tons of preparation: proper attire, armor and equipment. Journeying through the depths takes a long time, so players need rest as well. The game lets them set up camp at any time. While resting, the playable character can sleep, cook, trade or sit by the campfire, playing a guitar alongside friends.

Game modes

We Kill Monsters supports singleplayer and co-op for up to four players.

Technical aspects

The game's 3D visuals make use of a subdued color palette, which further enhances its dark atmosphere.
