Wayward Souls Description
Wayward Souls is a roguelike action RPG in a retro style, in which players' task is to go through randomly generated dungeons and defeat hordes of various monsters. The game originally appeared on mobile devices but was also ported to other platforms. A small three-person studio Rocketcat Games is responsible for its creation.
Mechanics
After starting Wayward Souls, we choose one out of the six heroes, with only three of them available at the very beginning. Of course, the characters have different skills, which also determines the style of play. For example, a knight uses the sword and shield very well, a sorceress is fluent in casting various spells, and a rogue is characterized by agility and can use a wide arsenal of bombs. During the game, our heroes develop their skills and find different sets of equipment, which can significantly change the fighting style and effectiveness of the character.
The action of the game is shown in a classic view from above, and during the game, we travel through a total of 13 types of dungeons. In each of them, we face completely different opponents requiring the use of a slightly different tactic, as well as several traps and other challenges. At the end of each stage, we have to face a challenging boss - defeating that enemy gives us access to the next level. According to the roguelike genre, the hero's death in the game is permanent and means that you lose all of their equipment. Only gold is not lost, which can be spent, e.g. on perks for the next character.
The creators of Wayward Souls were inspired by productions such as Spelunky, Secret of Mana or their own Mage Gauntlet. In the game, however, you will also find numerous similarities to the cult Dark Souls. Rocketcat Games's title offers a similar challenge, and success depends not so much on your equipment, but primarily on the skills of the player.
Technical aspects
Wayward Souls is characterized by retro-style graphics, reminiscent of productions from SNES or Game Boy Advance. The advantage of the game is its intuitive interface, devoid of any virtual analog sticks and buttons, which significantly facilitates the fun. Thanks to the variety of character classes and randomly generated levels, the game can be played many times without the feeling of fatigue.
