War for the Overworld is a real-time strategy game with focus on the economical aspect, and a humoristic, fantasy setting. It is a debut production for the Subterranean Games studio.
The game was created as a spiritual successor to the Dungeon Keeper series, the developers have made sure to reconstruct most of the basic mechanics and elements of the classic. However, they have not limited their efforts to simply remaking the Bullfrog studio’s game and added substantial amount of their own ideas into the production. Upon starting War for the Overworld, the player has a small underground domain under his command, it is his task to expand it into a proud kingdom of evil. The forces of good under the command of Emperor Stockington inhabit the surface, and they will not stand idly by while your empire grows.
The key to success in War for the Overworld is a strong economy; it is also hugely important to carefully plan out the rooms and corridors of your dungeons. Expanding your underground fortress and training new forces for your armies can be extremely satisfying; however, as it was mentioned before, you need to already have a well-developed kingdom at your command to maintain your forces. Every monster and demon which serves you also has his own needs, and if you fail to fulfil them, they will leave you to your own fate at a moment’s notice; some creatures only desire food, others, more powerful ones, also demand a pay in gold. There are also various traps and defenses within the game, which you can purchase to help you protect your dungeon, and as a dark lord you also have access to powerful spells. Furthermore, some of your monsters worship dark deities and upon delivering appropriate ingredients, they will conduct rituals to increase your strength even further. All of these features make the sandbox mode and the single player campaign extremely fun to play. Nevertheless, the developers have also decided to include a multiplayer mode in War for the Overworld.
