Jagged Alliance
Wages of War is a tactical turn-based strategy, which is a kind of response to the popularity of the Jagged Alliance series and takes up similar topics. The title was developed by the little-known development studio Random Games, and the role of publisher was taken over by New World Computing, the creator of the cult series Might & Magic.
The action of the game takes place in the near future - in 2001, when almost all oil reserves are destroyed as a result of the conflict in the Middle East. This leads to growing disputes around the world, resulting in drastic changes in the political map and an increase in the importance of terrorist organisations. In Wages of War, players are at the forefront of mercenaries' organizations, undertaking various missions to restore order in different parts of the world for a reasonable fee.
In the course of the game we will be faced with 16 different scenarios and a linear campaign, during which our goal will be to select orders sent by private corporations or official governments of different countries. Prior to joining the mission, we can negotiate the terms of the mission, such as the salary and time needed to complete the task. Then we have to reach to our mercenary base and choose the people best suited to perform the task. After appropriate training and equipping our team with weapons purchased on the black market, we set out on a mission in which a good plan counts above all, and any imprudent action may determine the failure of the action and exposing our organization to the loss of reputation and valuable cash.
The action of the game is shown in isometric view, and our mercenaries are controlled in turn-based mode, using action points of individual team members. Among the tasks we will have to perform will be stealing important documents, taking hostages and escorting important personalities. The mercenaries had at their disposal quite a large arsenal of various weapons, ranging from typical small arms, through rifles, pistols and machine guns, to crossbows and grenades. The authors of the game took care of such details as the possibility of failure or destruction of weapons or the loss of radio communication, making it impossible to coordinate actions.
