Void Terrarium is a roguelike game kept in the dungeon crawler convention, in which we take the role of a robot exploring the postapocalyptic world and dealing with a randomly found girl. The game was developed by Nippon Ichi Software studio.

Plot

Void Terrarium takes us on a journey to the world, whose surface, controlled by toxic mushrooms, is no longer suitable for life. Humanity has constructed machines to dig for it underground, which it would make its new home. However, before it could populate them, it almost died out. However, the machines continue to operate, so the system of these tunnels is constantly changing.

The main character of the game is a robot abandoned in a junkyard, activated under mysterious circumstances. Soon after, the machine finds a girl named Toriko, who has managed to stay alive despite being infected by fungus. Our protégé decides to take care of her and create a shelter for her, the titled terrarium. To complete this task, however, you must travel through a world full of dangers and search for valuable resources, which is complicated by the fact that in the meantime the robot will have to take care of Toriko's health and well-being.

Mechanics

The gameplay in Void Terrarium takes place on two planes. The first one is connected with exploration of the world, during which we look for useful resources, while observing the action from a top-down view. It's not easy, because particular resources can be found in specific zones, which requires precise planning of each expedition. Moreover, the wilderness is full of all kinds of dangers. People with whom we have dynamic battles and various traps pose a threat to our robot. In addition, we have to be on guard when the weather breaks; rainfall increases the level of contamination, which in turn has a destructive effect on the condition of the robot and the items it carries, as well as making adversaries stronger.

Speaking of items - among them you'll find things that can be transformed into valuable resources, as well as food for Toriko and various medicines. After completing the expedition we return to the terrarium, which is our base, where Toriko is waiting for us. Obtained resources are used to produce items that both improve the girl's living conditions and develop the robot. As we progress, we unlock new skills for the machine and increase its combat potential, thanks to which with time we can venture further and face more challenges.

The second plane of gameplay is connected with taking care of Toriko. A device called Pet Nanny allows us to constantly monitor the condition of the girl and react in time when something bad starts to happen to her. Toriko needs not only to be provided with food and a chance to rest, but also not to be bored and feel lonely. So we have to visit her as often as possible and take care of various decorations in the terrarium. When a girl feels worse, we have to check whether it is connected with her worse mood or she has got one of the diseases (for example, after eating a contaminated meal), which if ignored can have fatal consequences.

Technical aspects

Void Terrarium features colourful graphics in a clear, cartoon style.
