Viking City Builder is an economic city-builder with real-time strategy elements. It's the debut game of the studio Titan GameZ and lets the player participate in viking expansion onto European lands.

Mechanics

As with most strategy games, the gameplay is shown from the top-down perspective, with a view of the entire area. The game consists of several layers, including expanding our settlement, exploring the surrounding lands and fighting hostile factions.

The available buildings have been sorted into several categories. There are residential buildings, long houses used for feasting, harbor buildings of places of worship. Each plays a different role and provides various bonuses, allowing our community to function. For example, residential buildings are where our townspeople sleep, keeping up their morale, the harbor lets us get food and trade, etc. Constructing buildings requires resources (like wood and stone) and workforce. As our village develops, its population increases, letting us construct buildings faster, acquire resources quicker and build up our settlement's defenses. We can also increase productivity by placing buildings correctly. Terrain obstacles can be used to secure our settlement further, but we must be careful when planning the streets layout, as they can end up getting in our way too.

In addition to constructing buildings, our townspeople are necessary for hunting, defending the settlement and raiding. Hunting gets us food, which is necessary for survival, though sometimes we can fail or not get enough supplies. If that happens, raiding a nearby town could be a solution. We can train our townspeople to raid, pillage and burn hostile villages, bringing lots of resources - and lots of enemies. This means our settlement can be attacked us well. If we fail to defend it, we lose valuable supplies and a lot of progress.

We're not limited to just our town - we can also build drakkars, man them and send them down a river or even further, to the open sea, to search for greater, yet more heavily guarded loot.

Technical aspects

Viking City Builder runs on Unreal Engine 5, which meant high-quality visuals at the time of its release. The game impressively recreates the historical viking era.
