Victi: Blood Bitterness (in the United States known as Vigil: Blood Bitterness) is the first part of a planned series of episodic adventure games. Authors from the French studio Freegamer created a title in which the most important is the atmosphere. Throughout the game, the player feels the hopelessness and chaos of the world in which the hero he leads.
It is Dehon, the last surviving disciple of the great Gomenda, the former ruler of an ancient civilization of mysterious, masked beings. Before the events shown in the game, Dehon killed his three brothers. He did not do it in self-defence, he was simply driven by a desire for power. When he was able to live peacefully in a deserted castle, it turned out that it was filled with a strange incorporeal power. The only rescue is to escape from the vast, reminiscent labyrinth of a building. Dehon, without the support of his loved ones, must rely solely on himself.
The gameplay itself uses the point and click interface popular in adventure games. Use the left mouse button to indicate the characters where to go, and the right mouse button to interact with the elements of the environment. Unlike most of this type of production in Victi: Blood Bitterness can be killed.
Graphics in the game is highly surrealistic and economical in means. Despite the fact that it uses 3D technology, the whole world is shown in black and white colors. Sometimes only some elements of the environment have been highlighted in a different colour (for example, a red bloodstain). The way of imaging used by the authors brings to mind the series of Frank Miller's comic books "Sin City" and a film based on them.
Another element important for emphasizing the uncanny atmosphere of the game is the music: dark, electronic, disturbing. The voice of our hero, who speaks in some strange language that combines French, English and Latin, also sounds similar. Of course, we do not need to try to understand it, because every speech is accompanied by English subtitles.
