Plot

The game takes players to a world, in which humanity utilizes advanced technologies based on steam engines. During the story campaign, one gets to control a group of daredevils who are trapped on a mysterious island with only one way to escape – they have to reach the top of the gigantic mechanical tower located in the center of the island.

The game delivers a rich story, which a player gets to follow through journals and letters. The game has been developed in a way that a player can ignore the story and focus solely on the gameplay.

Mechanics

The PC release of Vaporum is a dungeon crawler RPG inspired by the classic games from the 1980s and 1990s, such as Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder. However, the mechanics from these games have been slightly altered to fit the more modern formula, which simplifies the interface and makes the controls more straightforward.

In the game, a player observes the action from the first-person perspective, however, he can turn by 90 degrees to the left and right. The game utilizes a tile-by-tile movement system. Combat takes place in real time. The adversaries are divided into many types, each one featuring certain strengths and weaknesses. Similarly, both weapons and armor are diversified, which forces a player to cautiously choose the equipment.

During the journey, a player is faced with multiple logical puzzles. Moreover, one can develop the character – unlike similar games, in which the avatar can have stats improved, in Vaporum for PC we can develop the main protagonists by improving the combat potential of the pieces of armor worn by team members. The game does not feature any kind of magic, nonetheless, a player gains access to a rich arsenal of diversified gadgets – they can be installed on one's “exo-rig”. Whenever a player uses a gadget like this, it draws the armor's energy, thus it has to be used cautiously.
