Valkyria Chronicles: Remaster for PS4 is a remastered version of Valkyria Chronicles. Originally, the production was released in 2008 for PlayStation 3. A few years later, on November 11th, 2014, it was ported to PC, selling over half a million copies within a year. The remastered edition was announced in November, 2015, on the occasion of revealing the fourth major installment in the series, titled Valkyria: Azure Revolution. The enhanced game offers, first and foremost, improved graphics. Apart from that, SEGA also introduced some minor elements, such as trophies that we collect by performing various activities. Valkyria Chronicles: Remaster debuted on February 10th, 2016.
Story
Valkyria Chronicles: Remaster takes us to a fictional world resembling alternative World War II epoch Europe, assuming that the war did not actually happen. The action takes place in Gallia, a small country invaded by the forces of the East European Imperial Alliance. The player, as Lt. Welkin Gunther, leads the characters of the 7th platoon of the Gallian Militia's 3rd Regiment (and later a part of the Atlantic Federation’s army) through a series of story-driven battles that will decide the fate of Gallia.
Gameplay
Combat in Valkyria Chronicles: Remaster starts in the command mode, where we see a map that shows the complete layout of the surrounding terrain, including the positions of our allies, enemies, and mission objectives. Battles are fought using a turn-based system called BLiTZ (Battle of Live Tactical Zones), which grants us with a limited number of action points that are spent on movement, crouching, hiding behind covers and, of course, firing at our opponents. By selecting an allied unit, we are taken to the battlefield and assume direct control over a character from third person perspective. Having spent all of our characters' points, the artificial intelligence takes its turn, while we patiently wait for ours.
The available allied characters are divided into several classes, each of which has different equipment that proves useful in specific situations; Welkin can operate a tank, other classes include scouts, snipers, shock troopers, lancers (anti-armour specialists), and engineers. For the duration of a battle, we can field up to ten units, selected before each mission from the pool of available allies. Choosing the right squad can have a significant impact on the course of battle as the skills of your soldiers are designed to complement themselves. Furthermore, some units provide unique bonuses when acting together with specific allies.
