Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late

Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late for PC and PS3 is a traditional 2D fighting game developed by a team of the gaming industry veterans that specialize in this genre; they work for French Bread and Ecole Software studios. The creators had developed the popular Melty Blood series, as well as a few console games, such as Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax. Under Night In-Birth debuted in 2012 at arcade game rooms. The PC and PS3 version is based on its improved edition (Exe: Late), which additionally offers bonus playable characters.

Plot

The story takes place in an alternative version of the present-day Japan. For a few centuries, the country has been marred by a mysterious phenomenon, which encompasses various regions of the land. Shadow-like creatures known as the Voids appear in places touched by the anomaly. Regular humans cannot perceive those beings, but a small group of people has the skills allowing them to contact the monsters. This talent is a curse however, as the Voids mercilessly attack all those who can see them. Few people that manage to survive an encounter with the Voids gain supernatural powers and begin to be referred to as the In-Birth. The main characters of the game represent this group, but for different reasons, they have to fight one another. The game does not feature an extensive story mode, what can be found for instance in games belonging to the BlazBlue series – instead, the story of the characters was presented in the arcade mode, in the form of short cutscenes.

Mechanics

Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late for PC and PS3 is a conventional 2D fighting game. Apart from the aforementioned arcade mode (a series of encounters), the player can choose from a few other gameplay variants, such as survival or score attack. The game offers 16 different fighters – each of them has their own special attacks and combos; slightly different combat strategies have to be applied in cases of various fighters. Also, the player can have fun with others, either in the local multiplayer or in the online variant.

Technical aspects

Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late for PC and PS3 comes with visuals presented using a graphic style typical of comic books and is quite eye-pleasing. Both the characters and backgrounds can be displayed at high-resolution settings and they make a very good impression on large screens. The soundtrack consists of a series of tracks mingling rock and electronic sounds together.
