Ultimate Spider-Man, available on PC, PS2 and etc. is Activision's another offer for fans of Spider-Man's adventures. The game was developed by Treyarch, studio known by fans of the "web slinger".
Plot
Unlike the previous games, this one is not connected to Sam Raimi's movies and instead it focuses on the comic book series with the same title. Ultimate Spider-Man is a more modern version of Peter Parker's early years as a superhero. In that series Peter still only "dates" Mary Jane Watson, attends university and has a part-time job in Daily Bugle where he works on the newspaper's Internet pages.
Mechanics
The game is played from third person perspective. As Spider-Man, we can explore Manhattan and Queens but we can also visit locations known from the comic books: Daily Bugle building and the family home. The game is constructed similarly as the "movie" Spider-Man games: we complete various missions between which we can experience the plot which focuses on eliminating super villains, such as Electro or Rhino. Besides playing as the titular hero, Ultimate Spider-Man also offers the option to play as Venom – Peter Parker's biggest enemy who has powers similar to those that Spider-Man has: using web, wall crawling etc. The only difference between these characters is that Venom's powers come from his suit which is an alien symbiote. In order to survive, he constantly needs to "feed" on civilians because this is the only way for the symbiote to keep the host at full power.
Both characters fight on New York's streets by using a complex melee combat system which involves various basic attacks and combos that are unique for each of them. In addition to that, Venom – thanks to his increased power – can rip out objects from environment and use them in battles.
Technical aspects
Ultimate Spider-Man, released on PC, PS2 and etc., offers good, cartoony graphics. The game looks very similar to a comic book – each character has a black outline and all cut-scenes are made in a such way that they resemble a comic book format.
