Another installment of the popular UFO series, which is tirelessly continued by a Czech team Altar Games, in cooperation with a distributor Cenega Publishing. Similarly to the previous installments, UFO: Afterlight for PC is a mix between a tactical action game and a global strategy, in which the player controls the operations and the development of a net of bases and leads a group of elite soldiers to battle.

Plot

The plot of the game is set shortly after the events seen in UFO: Aftershock, and takes place on Mars, where humanity, with a considerable contributions from Reticulants, have created a base. It is practically a self-sufficient construction that guarantees the survival of the colonists in a hostile environment. While exploring the planet, the base inhabitants have discovered remains of a mysterious, highly-developed civilization. Motivated by the desire to acquire more knowledge about the ruins, the humans began excavation works near the site. As it turned out, it was a huge mistake, as an ancient defense system consisting of hundreds of battle robots had been activated. It was created by the aliens to annihilate any new race that would appear on Mars. The colony is on the verge of destruction, with an even more dangerous enemy looming on the horizon, closing in on the planet through hyperspace gates.

Gameplay

UFO: Afterlight for PC burdens the player with responsibility for the fate of the humans on Mars. Our task is to use the means available to colonists to help them to survive. When it comes to the gameplay, the main difference between the previous installments is a completely new environment. We finally leave the well-known Earth, to visit the uncharted Mars. The environment in which our soldiers operate is fully interactive, we can enter the multistory buildings, use termovision, etc.

The authors implemented a new system of strategic resource management, as well as added the options for terraforming Mars (in late game phase). The number of the technologies that can be researched in laboratories has also been increased, resulting in new weapons and equipment available at our soldiers’ disposal in the following missions. New, previously unseen enemies, including alien races, robots, or drones have been incorporated, with some of them may switch teams and join our ranks. Diplomacy, which has debuted in UFO: Aftershock, now has an even bigger influence on the gameplay or the plot. Management of the bases and the buildings inside them has also been improved.

As always, each of our soldiers has a set of individual traits, including name and surname, character class, and gathers experience in each mission.
