Tirian is a classic two-dimensional slot machine production where we take control of a spacecraft to survive a wave of enemies arriving from the edge of the screen and then defeat an exceptionally strong boss at the end of the stage. As the game progresses, we get access to a more and more substantial arsenal and discover further fragments of the presented story.

The action of the game Tyrian was set in the distant future in 20031. The main character of the game is Trent Hawkins, a pilot who searches for places suitable for settlement on terraformed planets. The last one was near the territory inhabited by the Hazudra breed, which resembled lizards. One day Trent's best friend of the breed, Buce Quesillac, was shot unexpectedly. A dying buddy betrayed him that behind this action stands a large corporation Microsol, leading the terraforming process. There is a serious presumption that it has been able to discover a priceless mineral, due to its properties for levelling the gravitational force, called Gravitium. Microsol Corporation intends to use it secretly in its flying units and has therefore begun to liquidate all those who know its secret. As a result, Trent becomes her next target and decides to escape to the free world of Savar. Then the right adventure begins.

During the main feature mode we take part in a series of missions taking place on different planets. After completing each stage we get to know another part of the story and go to the shop, where we buy better and better items of equipment, including front, side and rear cannons, armour, protective shields or a battery that allows us to use more and more energy-consuming equipment at the same time. Side cannons, unlike the main cannons, allow the use of e.g. powerful bombs dealing huge damage, but we can use them only several times during the mission.

In addition to the feature mode, the creators also prepared a more simplified Arcade. In this case, at the start we choose the basic equipment, and during the game we try to capture the incoming power-ups allowing us to improve the controlled machine. Two players controlling different ships can take part in the game at the same time. One of them is more manoeuvrable, but less durable, while the other has a thick armor and a powerful gun, but moves much slower.

Tyrian has a two-dimensional graphic design. The whole gameplay is observed from a bird's eye view, moving on different planets. Each of them is characterized by a different climate and new types of opponents. During combat, the screen is enveloped in multicolored missiles coming in from all sides.
