Wrath of Sparta for PC is the third large expansion for Total War: Rome II - the base title that has been released in September 2013. Once again, Creative Assembly and SEGA are the developer/distributor duo responsible for the game.
Gameplay
The third expansion takes us to the oldest historical period ever recreated in Total War series, since we begin our struggle in 432 B.C., in the initial years of the Second Peloponnesian War. It was a conflict between coalitions led by Athens and Sparta, sparked from conspiracy by Corinth and Boeotia as a result of already very tense political situation in the Hellenic world – the direct aftermath of the destructive Persian invasion.
Campaign
The campaign takes place in ancient Greece and Asia Minor, with four playable factions left at the player’s disposal: Athens, Sparta, Corinth, and Boeotia, with each nation having its own weak and strong points. As a direct cause of the somewhat short duration of the campaign, each year in the game has been divided into 12 turns for 12 months. The gameplay is further complemented by various periodic festivities, which force the player to make certain decisions with different political consequences.
Mechanics
As per tradition, Wrath of Sparta expansion for PC introduces new buildings, units, technological trees, and tribal affinities (in exchange for previous cultures), and further new historical personas, such as Spartan leader Lysander, or a famous philosopher Socrates. When it comes to technical improvements, we should mention eliminating the ability to batter other ships using transport vessels. This move has increased the realism of naval battles, and eliminated the unfair advantage resulting from these free units.
