Tormented Souls is a classic survival horror action adventure game, in which the action is presented from a third person perspective (TPP). The style of the game strongly refers to such classics as Resident Evil, Silent Hill or Alone in the Dark, keeping the elements that made them popular. However, there are some improvements - the camera is more dynamic and the control scheme has been modernised. Tormented Souls was developed by independent studio Dual Effect, while PQube released it.
Plot
The game is set in the fictional Winterlake. Caroline Walker, the protagonist, has to solve the disappearance of her two sisters and goes to Wildberger Mansion, an abandoned residence turned into a hospital, where she hopes to gain some valuable information. While searching the building, she is attacked and knocked unconscious by an unknown person. Seven days later she awakens suddenly - connected to a strange, decaying apparatus, completely naked and submerged in a bathtub filled with musty water. Soon after her release, she realises she has lost all her memories and begins to wander the corridors, trying to remember who she is and understand the purpose of her imprisonment in this mysterious, eerie mansion.
Mechanics
The main goal of the game is to explore a huge mansion, solve logic puzzles and fight different types of monsters. The main character wanders through the locations in order to find any information that would help her figure out who she really is and why she was imprisoned. She has the ability to explore individual objects and collect items necessary to solve some of the puzzles or gain access to more rooms. The inventory system used in the game brings to mind classic Resident Evil.
Like in Silent Hill games, Tormented Souls features two dimensions - real and alternative. Here, however, Caroline moves between them using mirrors, located in different parts of the mansion. To activate the passage, the heroine must light the candles, located on both sides of the object. After activating the portal, the player not only goes to an alternative world, but also to another time. The mirrors allow the player to manipulate the events taking place in reality, turning various situations to his advantage.
Monstrous creatures of various types also appear in the game, sometimes blocking access to subsequent parts of the mansion or guarding some of the valuable items. These units exist in both the real and alternative worlds and will not hesitate to attack an intruder, however, the heroine can kill them by using previously found weapons (e.g. nailer).
To save the progress in the game, the player has to use a recording tape. After getting it and using it on an old tape recorder, the possibility of saving the progress will appear. During the save, the heroine also tells you the most important information she has gathered so far.
Technical aspects
Tormented Souls features 3D graphics, where a lot of attention has been paid to detailing the locations. The mansion's style may bring to mind a building from the first Resident Evil (or its remastered version).
