Theresia, known on the Far East market as Theresia: Dear Emile, is an adventure game in a horror atmosphere, the action of which we observe from the perspective of the first person. The title was created by Japanese developer WorkJam, specializing in making detective adventures for portable consoles and mobile phones, and known for producing titles such as the Jake Hunter series. Theresia was released on the Nintendo DS platform and its port was hosted on iPhone under the name Theresia: Dear Martel.
It is a story of twisted love and painful despair. The game is divided into two separate stories, in which we direct the actions of two heroes suffering from amnesia. In the first of them, she is a young girl who, in unknown circumstances, wakes up in a strange prison. In the second, a young man wakes up inside an old orphanage. They both have to visit these dark places in search of a way out and, at the same time, find answers to such questions as: who they are, how they found themselves there and what it is all about. During their escape, they come across a mass of puzzles to solve and traps to bypass. They also have to face up to their internal demons.
We walk through dark corridors and immerse ourselves in the dark climate of an abandoned prison or or orphanage in search of a way out. On the way we collect objects and notes and solve puzzles encountered on our way, which gradually reveal the gloomy and twisted plot. The gameplay uses a style, which you can click on one of the four directions in which your character can move. The top screen displays a helpful map that makes it difficult for us to get lost. The road is filled with various types of traps, which are activated to injure the hero/hero at careless clicking on elements of the environment or pressing the wrong switches. This forces the player to make cautious decisions, thus building up tension.
Graphics are divided into three-dimensional corridors and drawn in two room dimensions. Special attention should be paid to music and sounds, often in the form of terrifying moans and murmurs, which can eat hair on the neck while walking through the darkened corridors. There are also film interludes building the atmosphere of the game.
Theresia is one of the few titles for the NDS console, which received high age requirements; it can frighten and overwhelm the atmosphere, its plot is dark and twisted and will surely appeal to many fans of horror movies.
