The Troop is a WWII turn-based strategy game developed by Giant Flame. Inspired by real events, it lets us play as the Allies or the Third Reich. The in-game missions aren't supposed to accurately reflect real events, though.
The Troop is meant to be challenging, but not a merciless wartime simulator. The game doesn't feature regular difficulty selection, its difficulty is freely adjustable through numerous options.
Plot
The game begins in 1994, in the early hours of Operation Overlord, focusing on British and Canadian forces in Normandy. The Operation was meant to liberate Northwestern Europe from the Nazis.
The playable scenarios tell the stories of Allied and Nazi armored brigades.
Mechanics
The Troop is a WWII strategy game. The player commands infantry, vehicles and tanks on French battlefields, villages and towns. Battles are turn-based and we command each individual unit one by one.
The Troop is a tactical game requiring proper planning (setting up ambushes, flanking and adapting to the enemy's strategy). We start off many missions in hiding, which grants us an advantage. We must also take good care of our soldiers' morale - it drops when the enemies get an advantage, and we lose if it runs out completely. The enemy AI is meant to behave differently during every battle. This makes our opponents more unpredictable.
Aside from the campaign, there's also Skirmish mode, during which we can choose both sides of the conflict, determine available units and set restrictions.
