The Talos Principle VR is a title of Croteam studio (known from popular Serious Sam series) and a special version of The Talos Principle, a 2004’s puzzle game. It has been released for PC and requires virtual reality headset along with dedicated motion controllers.
Plot
The Talos Principle VR consists of both base version of The Talos Principle and an official expansion named Road to Gehenna. The game tells story of a protagonists awakening in unfamiliar world, where ancient ruins are mixed with futuristic technology. Soon he is contacted by Elohim, a voice from the heaven belonging to a self-proclaimed god. He informs the character of many challenges (namely puzzles) that await him in three words that surround a mysterious tower. The hero has no choice, but to use their brain and solve every puzzle.
Game mechanics
PC’s version of Talos Principle VR uses first-person perspective (FPP). Players must solve over one hundred and twenty diverse puzzles located in several locations. Some might be about moving Tetris-like blocks, while others might include air blasts created by huge windmills, recording and playing character’s moves, controlling drones or reflecting laser beams off mirrors. Most puzzles require certain tools (like a prism for said laser), unlocked with seals that can be collected throughout the game.
The plot plays a very important role as well, with hints being hidden in Elohim’s enigmatic language, and notes and messages scattered throughout the game. Philosophical debates with artificial intelligence calling itself Milton, during which the game confirms player’s beliefs also shed a different light on the whole story.
With the addition of virtual reality, the developers had to prepare a new control scheme. Players turn their head to look around and move smoothly with teleportation system. Hand movements are responsible for interacting with surroundings, thanks to motion controllers.
Technical aspects
Three-dimensional visuals of Talos Principle VR are taken from the original game. As a result, it offers high quality graphics, especially when compared to other virtual reality titles.
