The Signal From Tolva

The Signal From Tölva for PC is a science fiction first-person action game with open world. The production was developed by Big Robot, an independent studio known for the humorous Sir, You Are Being Hunted that received a mixed reception.

Plot

In the world of The Signal From Tölva, artificial intelligence decided to abandon the humanity and being exploring the galaxy on its own. The protagonist participates in the events kind of indirectly since he isn’t physically present on the eponymous planet of Tölva but hacks robots that are instead. Once one machine is destroyed, we simply take control over another one. The hero’s task is to investigate a signal that comes somewhere from beneath the planet’s surface and hides a dark secret. The developers admitted that they used well-known science fiction formulas while designing the game.

Mechanics

Contrary to Sir, You Are Being Hunted, in The Signal From Tölva, we do not shy away from fights. We face hostile robot factions that struggle for territory. What’s interesting, such battles can take place even without our active participation. The developers gave a rich arsenal of futuristic weapons at our disposal as well as the possibility of using a plasma shield, shockwaves, and assuming control over other robots.

Technical aspects

Graphics-wise, the game presents a much higher quality level than Sir, You Are Being Hunted. It is partially due to the cooperation between Big Robot and Ian McQue, an artists that previously worked with Rockstar Games on such hits as Grand Theft Auto V and Max Payne 3. Thanks to him, The Signal From Tölva for PC combines an interesting visual style with landscapes characteristic of the science fiction genre: ruins of alien civilizations, crashed spaceships, and abandoned buildings. This time, the developers abandoned procedural environment generation but the map is still four times bigger than that of Sir, You Are Being Hunted.
