The Season of the Warlock is a humorous point-and-click adventure game developed by independent studio enComplot. Although the crowdfunding campaign for this project failed in April 2014, the developers still managed to finish it. The authors were inspired by the classics of the gothic novel, as well as horror films from the 1960s and 1970s, based on the works of Edger Allan Poe or H.P. Lovecraft.

Plot

Lord Alistair Ainsworth is known for his research on the mysterious sorcerer Waldemar, who centuries ago ruled in the end-of-the-world (in the mountains of Eastern Europe to be precise) Groldavia. Mocked by other historians who believe Waldemar to be a fictional character, he decides to go to this land, accompanied by his butler Nigel, to find tangible evidence of the existence of the evil magician and, on this basis, write a book that will bring him global fame. While there, he discovers his portrait, in which the soul of the sorcerer, burning with vengeance, is enchanted. Things take an unexpected turn when the sinister Waldemar makes Alistair an incredibly tempting proposition...

Mechanics

Shortly after the start of the game The Season of the Warlock confronts us with an important decision. The further course of events depends on which of the two solutions we decide on. In addition, the game gives us two playable characters, who have a different approach to certain situations and differently solve the problems encountered. The first of them is the distinguished Alistair Ainsworth, while the second - his butler, Nigel. As you play, you explore locations and solve puzzles, gaining access to new places and pushing the story forward. When designing the characters who appear on screen, the developers tried to capture the charisma of famous actors such as Vincent Price, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and Barbara Steele.

Interestingly, the authors let us choose the control system; although nothing prevents us from controlling the characters directly, we can also choose the interface and solutions straight from the classic point-and-click adventure games.
