The Past Within

The Past Within is a co-op adventure game. It is part of the Rusty Lake series and, like all parts of the brand, was developed by the Rusty Lake studio.

Plot

In The Past Within the player's task is to uncover the secrets related to a man named Albert Vanderboom. The problem is that he is already dead. The only way to find out the answers we need is to make contact with the past and cooperate with a person from those times.

Mechanics

The Past Within is an adventure game with a cooperative mode. In it two players have to solve puzzles working closely together. Each of them plays in a different historical period. One of them is shown in 2D and the other - in 3D.

Both periods are closely linked to each other. Clues in one are used to solve puzzles in the other. Similarly, our actions are reflected in another historical period. For example, we may need four symbols to open a safe, which the other player can discover by analysing the images on their own screen.

Game modes

The game offers only an online co-op mode for two people, each of whom must play on a separate device. The game offers a cross-play option, allowing owners of different hardware platforms to play together.

Technical aspects

2D part of The Past Within was made in an unusual cartoon graphic style known from earlier games from the Rusty Lake series. In turn, the 3D part has a more realistic look. It is worth mentioning that this is the first game from this brand, which features 3D graphics.
