The Night Wanderer

The Night Wanderer is a soulslike action RPG enriched with metroidvania elements. The game was developed by the Polish studio Mighty Koi, which has been operating since 2022, and is an adaptation of the series of novels The Lord of the Ice Garden by Jaroslaw Grzedowicz.

Plot

The Night Wanderer takes us to a universe bordering science fiction and fantasy - to the planet Midgaard, which is home to intelligent beings very similar to humans, stuck at a level of technological development close to the Middle Ages.

After the Earth's scientific expedition sent there disappeared without a trace, the elite mercenary Vuko Drakkainen arrives to find the missing members of the first expedition. Although he is the only participant in the rescue mission, he is accompanied by Cyphral, a biological AI connected to his nervous system and supporting him in various ways.

The game takes place in the Midgaard region, which strongly resembles Scandinavia from the Viking era. Because the planet is enveloped by an energy field that causes modern technology to stop working, Vuko has to deal with threats mainly using a sword.

Gameplay

In The Night Wanderer, we traverse interconnected locations, creating a kind of vast maze (much like many other metroidvania titles). Exploring the game world, we complete quests and face opponents, mainly engaging in close combat. The duels have a high level of difficulty (like one would expect from the soulslike subgenre).

In order to achieve success on the battlefield, we must carefully observe the behavior of our adversaries to discover their weak points and gaps in their defense. As we progress, we gain equipment and skills that increase our combat potential and give us access to previously blocked areas.

Engine

The Night Wanderer runs on Unreal Engine 5. The game utilizes, among others, photogrammetry technology, as well as mechanics based on artificial intelligence.
