A detective point-and-click adventure game with a semi-open world. The action of The Midnight Crimes takes place in a Victorian city and our detective is trying to solve the case of a missing child. Our choices heavily influence the story and the protagonist must also deal with stress and reputation.
The Midnight Crimes is a point-and-click detective adventure game. We assume the role of a private detective trying to leave behind his traumatic past and return to work in his profession. The creation of this game was made possible by the independent studio DeadlyCrow Games from Chile, whose portfolio includes such projects as the online game Horror Night or the "chilling" adventure titled Escape the Ayuwoki.
The action of The Midnight Crimes takes place in the Victorian town of Midnight Cove. The main character of the game is Benjamin Leighton, a war veteran and former private detective. After his family fell victim to a gruesome murder committed by an unknown perpetrator, the protagonist plunged into grief and alcoholism.
Ben unexpectedly gets the opportunity to solve the mystery of a missing child. The hero decides to take on this case, hoping that in this way he will be able to not only return to the detective business, but also deal with his own demons.
Leighton gets entangled in a plot involving paranormal phenomena and secret societies. Our actions and the choices we make can influence how the investigation will proceed.
In The Midnight Crimes we watch the action from various shots (usually from a bird's eye view). The basics of the game are similar to most detective point & click titles. We explore locations and conduct conversations with other characters (primarily interrogating suspects), as well as solve puzzles.
Over time, we gather clues and evidence, and we connect the acquired leads together on an interactive board in Benjamin's office. The board is the main tool for the protagonist, allowing him to discover new directions in which he can push his investigation.
In The Midnight Crimes we have a semi-open world at our disposal, with a day & night cycle and passing days. That second aspect is important because some places or clues are only available at specific times and on specific days. Conducting the investigation negatively affects the protagonist's psyche, impacting the effectiveness of his actions. The game allows us to reduce his stress level, for example by visiting special locations scattered around the city or even by adopting an animal.
Stress is not the only factor we need to pay attention to during the game. Other factors are reputation and eloquence, which determine how the residents of Midnight Cove relate to us. If these indicators are at a low level and we end up in one of the dangerous alleys of the town, we can easily get into trouble and, for example, become a victim of theft.
On the other hand, performing side quests and showing our good side ensures the favor of the characters we encounter. We can also receive special interactions, which (like the decisions we make) do not remain without influence on the course of the story and its ending.
