The Lord of The Rings Online: Siege of Mirkwood for PC is an expansion to a popular MMORPG set in the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien. The game focuses on the territories of Mirkwood known to all the fans of Middle-Earth from literary works of Tolkien, in particular, the book titled The Hobbit. The Siege of Mirkwood expansion has been developed by Turbine Entertainment, also known for working on such games as Asheron's Call and Dungeons & Dragons Online.
Plot
The main theme of this expansion is the Mirkwood inhabited by the immortal Elves but also by frightening spiders. Players can explore a number of previously unavailable locations and face new challenges. The Siege of Mirkwood expansion continues the story from the Mines of Moria add-on. Characters controlled by the players are ordered by Celeborn and Galadriel to fight off the armies of Orcs.
Mechanics
Among the new locations, the most prominent one is Dol Guldur – the legendary stronghold erected by Sauron himself. Inside it, players will encounter numerous threats. The fortress has been divided into instances for 3, 6, and 12 players, who have to face the powerful Witch King in one of the most epic battles ever to be featured by The Lord of The Rings Online.
Apart from the aforementioned attractions, the Siege of Mirkwood expansion offers other important elements – the level cap has been increased and entirely new artifacts (legendary items) have been added. Moreover, the developers have modified the combat system and implemented several minor improvements to gameplay mechanics. Also new is the Skirmish mode, in which players get to train soldiers and play in random multiplayer instances and participate in the War of the Ring.
Technical aspects
Since mid-2010, the game has switched to a free-to-play business model. This means that players can enjoy it for free, however, those who want to unlock the access to the so-called 'premium content' have to utilize the optional microtransactions system.
