The Legend of Legacy for 3DS is a Japanese fantasy RPG and a spiritual successor to the popular – especially in Japan – SaGa series, previously known as Final Fantasy Legend. The game has been developed by FuRyu (Unchained Blades) supported by the former Square Enix employees, who have been working on the original series.
Plot
The action of the game is set on the island of Avalon, which ten years before has emerged from the depths of the sea. The place hides multiple riveting stories about e.g. the ghosts sighted there and the artifacts allegedly left there by the ancient gods. In the game, a player assumes the role of one of the seven heroes, who want to uncover the mysteries of the island.
Mechanics
Among the predefined characters, one can find Meurs the Elementalist, Bianca suffering from amnesia, Liber the treasure hunter, Garnet the crusader, Owen the mercenary, Eloise the alchemist, and a prince trapped in the frog’s body. On his adventure, a player gets to control a party of three comprising the chosen character and two companions, which can be changed throughout the game. There is also the city of Initium established by the travelers who came to Avalon. The city serves as one’s base and a market, where one can sell his maps or pay for the transportations of the good supplied from other ports.
The Legend of Legacy for 3DS does not feature a script per se. The plot is non-linear and almost entirely dependent on player’s actions and decisions. The gameplay revolves around the exploration of the island, completing diverse quests, and waging turn-based battles. All the characters’ skills can be improved in the way known from the SaGa series, by using the already unlocked abilities. Interestingly enough, in combat, a player can call ghosts onto a battlefield, from which he gains additional abilities. The ghosts themselves are divided into four groups depending on the element they represent. A player has to remember that his adversaries can do exactly the same.
Technical aspects
The Legend of Legacy for 3DS delivers high-quality visuals, which a player is bound to appreciate, especially due to polished 3D character models combined with hand-drawn world textures. Interestingly, all the elements of the environment, e.g. trees, rocks, fences, etc. pop up, whenever a player approaches them.
