A metroidvania game with shoot'em up and card game elements. In The Knight Witch we play as Rayne, who traverses the underground city and eliminates hordes of enemies, making use of white and firearms and magic.
The Knight Witch is a metroidvania with shoot'em up and card game elements. It was developed by an independent studio Super Mega Team, formed by the people who previously worked on projects such as Rime, Moonlighter or Plants vs. Zombies series; its release was handled by Team17.
Plot
The Knight Witch takes us on a journey to a fantastic world, to be precise - to the underground city of Dungeonidas. The metropolis, whose inhabitants led a peaceful life, was attacked by an army of war golems. The main character of the game - Rayne - as the title knight-witch, takes on her shoulders the task of dealing with the threat.
Game mechanics
The Knight Witch is a side-scrolling game. We mainly travel through the vast locations and eliminate hordes of enemies. On our way we face both the cannon fodder which appear in mass quantities and much more powerful bosses.
The battles are extremely dynamic, and during them we have to be in constant motion to effectively dodge the enemy's bullets and launch quick counterattacks. This task is made easier by the ability to fly, which Rayne uses eagerly. The heroine can fight both in close combat, using cold weapons, as well as at a distance, using firearms and a wide range of spells. The latter are presented in the form of cards, which we can choose ourselves; thanks to this we can create a deck that will be best suited to our style of play.
In the game there is an original system of character development. Rayne grows in strength, thanks to the adoration of the inhabitants of Dungeonidas. It depends only on us whether we succumb to temptation and lie to the citizens in pursuit of their love, or decide to be honest and reveal the painful truth, at the expense of slower development. Either way, over time we unlock new spells and combat skills and upgrade the ones we already have, allowing us to face increasingly powerful opponents.
Technical aspects

Hardcore Gamer: 3.5 / 5 by James Cunningham
The Knight Witch is excellent in a lot of ways despite its forbidding difficulty, the kind of game you'll be glad to have beaten even if the journey to completion is sometimes a bit much.
Paste Magazine: 6.3 / 10 by Grace Benfell
The world only has life when parts of it are dying, when Rayne sets them afire with her spells. The Knight Witch wants you to be invested in its world, in the possibility of its death, in the ability of a community to live freely without exploitation. However, its only poetry is in virtual violence, in the simple thrill of outwitting a computer and watching its shrapnel fade from view.
Slant Magazine: 4 / 5 by Aaron Riccio
The game’s eeriest moment is attuned to the politics of denial and unresolved emotions. The final boss, a manifestation of the existential crisis that faces the planet, is extremely hard. It’s far easier to accept The Knight Witch’s offer for Rayne to just walk away from this battle and enjoy the next few years, hoping that maybe one of her allies can stop the world from ending. But that leads to an unsatisfying ending, with Rayne haunted by the question: “Was there more that I could have done?” This narrative beat is a bleak and brutal reminder that if we all keep blithely enjoying our lives instead of fighting the toughest of battles, we may come to regret it.
