The History Channel: Civil War is another collaboration between Activision and a popular TV channel. This time, the game created by Cauldron, responsible for Gene Troopers and Knights of the Temple II, takes us to the battlefields of the Civil War. It represents a first-person shooter.
Plot
Thanks to The History Channel: Civil War, we have the opportunity to play the role of a soldier representing one of the parties of the conflict (Union or Confederation) and participate in the most famous battles of that period. The developers prepared 12 levels, including Antietam, Bull Run and Gettysburg. A high degree of realism of gameplay, ensured by the use of topographic maps and historical photographs. Players who are familiar with the topography of North America during the Civil War certainly recognize locations such as Little Round Top or Lookout Mountain. In addition, each subsequent scenario is preceded by a cut-scene, which briefly outlines the most important moments of the battle and maneuvers of the army, as well as statistical data concerning it.
Mechanics
We can use quite a large arsenal of weapons, including repeating rifles, several types of grenades, revolvers, Gatling guns or muskets. In hand-to-hand combat, we can use a bayonet, sabers, rifle stock or simply use our fists. Since the soldier does not live by fighting alone, a number of side mission objectives have been prepared, such as sabotaging enemy artillery stations and communication lines, placing explosives, blowing up buildings or destroying enemy supplies.
Technical aspects
The drama of the presented events is emphasized by the visual and sound effects - artillery missile explosions happen next to us, bullets are whistling around or soldiers dying nearby are supposed to make us at least virtually aware of the brutality of the clashes in which we are taking part.
