The Great War: Western Front

The Great War: Western Front is a strategy game set during World War I, with RTS and turn-based strategy elements. It was developed by veterans of the genre, namely the Petroglyph Games studio, founded by the former creators of the Command & Conquer series, whose portfolio includes such projects as Star Wars: Empire at War, Panzer General: Allied Assault, Grey Goo or Conan Unconquered. To ensure the highest possible level of realism, for the purposes of the described project, the developers have teamed up with London's Imperial War Museum.

Plot

The Great War: Western Front takes us on a journey to the years 1914-1919, to the battlefields of World War I, or more precisely - to the Western Front. The production allows us to stand on the side of the Triple Entente or the Central Powers and take part in key battles, recreating historical events or changing the course of history.

Game mechanics

In The Great War: Western Front we observe the action from a top-down view. The gameplay here takes place on two levels, so to speak, the first of which is the command of the entire theater of operations. Over the course of successive turns, we send units into battle, conduct research on new technologies and take care of supply lines and the deployment of resources along the entire length of the front. In addition, the title allows us to take on the role of a field commander and participate directly in individual battles. Battles take place in real time, and during them we command troops, creating networks of trenches and storming enemy positions or defending against their attacks.

Variable weather conditions have been implemented in the game. Over the course of the following months, skirmishes take place not only during hot weather, but also during heavy rain or snowfall. Weather affects the effectiveness of our artillery and the mobility of units, so it is worthwhile to adapt our tactics to it in advance. In addition, our actions on the battlefield do not remain without influence on the appearance of the locations where the clashes take place; artillery fire causes the formation of funnels in the ground, and tanks sinking in the mud create permanent furrows in it. Trenches, on the other hand, can serve us not only during a single battle, but also during subsequent ones, when the war returns to the territory.

As for the units we send into battle - we are talking about infantry, artillery and tanks. As we progress, we also discover new technologies, such as battle gases, the skillful use of which can change the outcome of many battles. Each faction also has an individual set of strengths, which should be used.

Game modes

In addition to a comprehensive campaign, The Great War: Western Front offers the opportunity to take part in individual historical battles. In addition, a skirmish mode has been implemented in the game. The title also allows multiplayer with other players over the Internet.
