The Golden Years: Way Out West is a proposal of the Alawar Entertainment development team addressed to western fans and simple building-sim strategies (building simulator). The production is based on solutions known, among others, from the Hotel Mogul series.

The action of the game was set in the Wild West. The main protagonist, Gertruda, wants to buy her husband from prison, who found himself behind bars through a usurious loan. The woman and her son visit other mining towns and the player's task is to help them to bring them to their glory and thus gain valuable ore.

The Golden Years: Way Out West is based on the construction of buildings in fixed locations on the board to obtain raw materials (wood and gold) or to meet the specific needs of residents. The player must demonstrate the ability to think logically by planning their activities and managing resources. The tasks assigned to each of the 48 levels must be achieved within a certain time limit.

As the game progresses, the level of difficulty increases, especially the variety of buildings that can be erected (there are 27 types in total), as well as the number of duties, which often requires a lot of reflex in coordinating the activities of individual characters.

The Golden Years: Way Out West presents a level similar to the Mogul Hotel series of games. Two-dimensional graphics are kept in vivid colors and cartoon style. The creators took care of five different scenes in which the struggle takes place, as well as a gallery of interesting independent characters who add humorous accents to the plot.
