The Forbidden Arts is the work of the independent studio Stingbot Games, which delivered an interesting combination of RPG elements and solutions derived from action adventure games with aspects characteristic for side-scrolling platformers.
Story
The Forbidden Arts takes us to the fantasy land of Chora, whose fate became uncertain when a sinister necromancer expressed interest in the realm. Luckily, a worthy opponent, Phoenix, the main protagonist of the production, appeared unexpectedly and discovered his supernormal abilities enabling him to control fire. Luckily, the hero is not alone in his quest, as other daredevils join him in the course of his adventure.
Mechanics
The action in The Forbidden Arts is mostly watched from the side - however, at selected moments the camera moves behind the protagonist's back (TPP). The pillar of the game is traversing vast and diverse locations and performing tasks commissioned by NPCs; the completion of the missions requires us to eliminate enemies standing in our path, as well as solve environmental puzzles.
Battles take place in real time, and success requires not only good reflexes, but also skillful juggling with Phoenix' pyromantic abilities - although the hero can fight with a melee weapons, he is of much better use on the battlefield when casting fiery spells that severely hurt his enemies. Throughout the course of the adventure, the protagonist acquires new skills, thanks to which he can face more and more powerful adversaries. Dexterity is also often useful, as there is no shortage of jumping on platforms, avoiding traps or climbing on elements of the environment.
Technical aspects
Three-dimensional graphics of The Forbidden Arts are pleasing to the eye, even though they are average when it comes to technical aspects. This is due to the unique stylistics reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda. The visual sphere is complemented by a catchy soundtrack consisting of tracks played on acoustic guitar.
