The Fall Part 2: Unbound is a science fiction action adventure game with platformer elements for PC, SWITCH and etc., drawing inspiration from the classical genre called metroidvania. The title is the second part of the planned trilogy that was initiated in 2014 with the release of the well-received The Fall that first arrived to PC and later was ported to the 8th-gen consoles. Both games were developed by the independent Over the Moon Games led by John Warren, an industry veteran. Contrary to the original, the sequel came out for all target platforms simultaneously.

Plot

The plot of The Fall Part 2 starts directly after the events of its predecessor in which we – playing as an artificial intelligence called ARID built into his military suit – tried to save the life of a wounded pilot. In the sequel, ARID leaves her current platform and moves to a global network. Her primary task is to save herself. To do so, she has to take over various robots she encounters, each of which has different personality and capabilities.

Mechanics

The gameplay mechanics of The Fall Part 2 expands on the solutions of the original, combining platformer and exploration elements of the classical two-dimensional installments of the Metroid series with the world interaction typical of point ‘n’ click adventure games. The biggest novelty of the production is the fact that we assume control over different characters, each having their unique abilities and limitations. This solution significantly enriches the gameplay and, additionally, allowed the developers to introduce several different movement and combat mechanics. Similarly to the original, the creators put emphasis on integrating the gameplay with the plot, therefore, all activities in the game have their purpose and justification and are strictly connected to the story.

Technical aspects

The Fall Part 2: Unbound for PC, SWITCH and etc. is powered by the popular Unity engine and is characterized by atmospheric two-dimensional graphics with a darkish color tone. Compared to its predecessor, the controls, one of the most criticized elements of The Fall, were significantly improved.
