The Eternal Castle [REMASTERED] is an action adventure game developed by independent developers Leonard Menchiari, Daniele Vicinanzo and Giulio Perrone. The game is a remastered version of a cancelled game called The Eternal Castle that was to be published in 1987.
Plot
The action of The Eternal Castle [REMASTERED] takes place in the distant future. Humanity has acquired the technology to create self-sustainable ecosystems in space, which in turn has opened a way fpr them to start colonization of other planets. However, the numerous terrorist attacks have resulted in abandoning this initiative, with one station floating in space. When, as a result of global wars, the Earth became unfit for sustaining any form of life, a team of researchers was sent to its surface, whose task was to obtain the materials needed to continue the search for a new home in the interstellar space. The team never came back, thus either Adam or Eve (the player chooses one of these characters before starting the game) finally sets off on a suicidal mission.
Mechanics
In The Eternal Castle [REMASTERED] the action is shown from the side perspective. Twenty postapocalyptic locations in five different worlds await to be explored, including the Ancient Ruins, the Forgotten City, the Godless Laboratory, and the titular Eternal Castle. Interestingly enough, they are in part procedurally-generated.
When exploring these locations, players solve environmental riddles and fight various opponents - both people and all kinds of monsters led by powerful bosses. Players have to eliminate them either going in guns blazing or stealthily using a wide range of firearms and melee weapons. There are also platform elements - Adam or Eve have to jump over the chasms and climb on the elements of the environment. As players progress, they acquire new pieces for their arsenal and find useful items that provide the main protagonist with additional skills.
Technical aspects
The Eternal Castle [REMASTERED] has simple 2D visuals seeming as if taken straight from the 1980s. On the other hand, the game delivers a rich audio layer consisting of both atmospheric music and realistic sounds of the environment together with sounds accompanying the gunfights.
