The Escapist is the debut work of the independent Backstab Games studio. The production is inspired by classic, arcade 2D jump & run platforms.
The game has a very loosely outlined storyline. The red-haired hero wanders through a labyrinth full of dangers, trying to collect as many gold coins as possible. On its way there are numerous obstacles and traps, as well as bosses guarding the boards.
As befits a traditional platformer style, gameplay is all about running and jumping between platforms and avoiding traps such as wall spikes, circular saws and more. An innovative element of mechanics is the ability to "shoot" a character in a given direction, in order to use this skill again, the hero has to bounce off the wall or floor. This allows you to avoid obstacles or reach hard to reach places. Gold coins are scattered on the boards. They allow you to buy power-ups in the internal shop.
The creators prepared a total of 48 levels. They differ not only in the arrangement of obstacles, but also in their size and specific properties, such as the character's limited "range of sight". The level of difficulty of the game has been adjusted to the expectations of hardcore players, and the passage of some boards requires a lot of skill.
On the technical side, The Escapist is based on the capabilities of the popular Unity engine. The game is characterized by an aesthetically pleasing 2D graphic design. The soundtrack consisting of a dozen or so tracks fits well into the dynamic gameplay.
