The Day After: Origins is an open-world action game Developed by an independent Canadian studio called Coconut Games. Previously, the studio also worked on games for home platforms (Magnet Knights) as well as handheld devices (Sift Heads, Gravinyator).
Plot
The Day After: Origins takes players to Grayfox Hill – a small mining town located in North America. The place is under quarantine and has been isolated from the outside world, as the townsfolk fell victim to a dangerous and unknown virus that turns them into primitive, yet very dangerous creatures. The main protagonist – Noah Byers – attempts to stay alive in this unwelcoming reality and has to face all kinds of new problems, as well as some unsolved cases from their past.
The story is non-linear, and the protagonist’s actions are overwatched by the Karma system that reflects all his decisions.
Mechanics
In The Day After: Origins, the action is presented from a third-person perspective (TPP). During the game, one gets to explore the quarantine zone comprising deserted structures, forest areas, and creepy adits. The gameplay mechanics put a strong emphasis on combat – the so-called Outbusters can be infected in various guises, which determine their fighting features. To make things worse, the opponents can adapt to new conditions and player’s tactics, so one has to prove their skills in handling both cold steel and firearms, as well as think outside the box and resort to certain unconventional measures, such as covering the bullets with special substances, adding some additional side effects to the overall damage they deal.
Game modes
The PC release of The Day After: Origins allows one to play both alone and with another player via the cooperative multiplayer mode. What is interesting, during the adventure a player can compare his or her choices to those of the other members of the community. To top it all, the game delivers special challenges – players can share their scores through the online ranking boards.
Technical aspects
The 3D visuals featured in the PC release of The Day After: Origins are bound to be appreciated by many players. Even though the character models can only be described as decent, the rich vegetation all around Grayfox Hill is quite pleasing to one’s eye. Moreover, the realistic lighting effects along with the detailed interiors are quite appealing.
